Lagoon is an amusement park some 40 miles north of Salt Lake City proper. As Lady Ferelith MacDonald and Lord Gallowglass, in their mundane personas, were part of the Wild West Show in the Pioneer Village there, they arranged for the SCA to do a demo there one fine Saturday. As this was a holiday weekend (July 24th is Pioneer Day in Utah), there were many people at the park that day.

'Twas a warm and sunny 22nd day of July A.S. XIII when a goodly portion of the shire populace traveled north to a place called Lagoon. There we did gather on the Pioneer Village Green to dance, make merry and fight in honorable combat for the benefit of the many mundane folk that abound at this place.

After a fine picnic beneath the greenwood trees we began our demo with a favorite shire dance, the bransle. By twining in and out of the line of dance most of the shire populace developed arms at least two inches longer than they had had before the dance.

By now several of the fighters were in armor and challenges were flying right and left. As the fighters paired off, Lady Ferelith began describing for the gawking crowd gathered around the finer points of fighting S.C.A. style along with some of the other S.C.A. pastimes.

One of the more notable challenges was Zelph's challenge to Sir Robert when Zelph proclaimed his leg armor prettier than Sir Robert's. In a four man melee, Cormak proved victorious over the team of Sir Robert and Hiltz after his own teammate had been downed.

Of special interest to everyone was Howel's bid for admittance into the Shire Guard. In a two-out-of-three match with Sir Robert, Howel did acquit himself most nobly and Sir Robert deemed him fit to enter the Shire Guard. The badge of the Shire Guard was awarded to Howel on the Field of Honor by my own hand and all joined in three cheers for the new Guardsman, Howel.

More dancing took place at various times between challenge matches, sometimes the Shire Pavanne, sometimes the Candle Dance. First shire folk would go thru the dance on the first round, then on the second round many of the dancers would invite one of the watching people to dance with them. This was a fine and friendly way to introduce one of the pleasures of S.C.A. to those who were not familiar with the Current Middle Ages.

The day progressed in merry style with much dancing and many fine fighting bouts between our fighters and all was well except for a curious change that came over Lady Ferelith and Lord Gallowglass. Several times during the day they changed into clothing strange and unfamiliar to shire folk and made their way over to the Pioneer Village.

Witchcraft some cried or some wily wizard's spell has befallen them. Several concerned shire folk followed our stricken friends to the village and there all our fears of evil doings were laid to rest as we were entertained most merrily by Lady Ferelith and Lord Gallowglass (and Sister Scholastica's "He's not saved yet!") and company in a western shootout. A most curious spell but harmless it would seem. However a number of the shire ladies seeing Lord Gallowglass caught in this strange spell, decided to abduct him. The surprise of being abducted in such an unsuspected manner by such well meaning ladies roused Lord Gallowglass from his enchantment and he then rewarded all his abductors with a kiss.

As the day darkened to dusk, an informal court was held. Lady Mirhaxa av Morktorn, who had been in attendance to the day's activities, was introduced to the shire populace as our Shire Godmother. Lady Mirhaxa expressed her pleasure at attending the day's events and then made a presentation to our Mistress of Arts, Lady Elaine, of a sterling silver serving spoon and fork. The serving set will become a traveling trophy in the newly formed Cooking Guild. Three cheers and a hearty thank-you to Lady Mirhaxa.

The day closed with song in a pioneer chapel then one by one the shire folk headed for home and hearth.
