Ideas For Arms

As I'm sure happens with many groups, we went through a lot of ideas as to what we'd like for arms for our shire. From the start, I think, we liked the idea of simple black and white.

The December A.S. XII issue of The Questing Quill showed an early version. Many of the ideas were for a counterchanged design, like the one below.

Knight riding horse and bearing shield

The horseman's shield shows a very early version of what we thought we'd like for arms for am Mor Salann Fasach. A closer view of the horseman's shield.

By February A.S. XII we had a different idea. The banner the Shire had at Burro Creek I (and submitted to the College of Arms) looked like this:

trumpet with banner
From a drawing in the April A.S. XII issue of The Questing Quill

In the September A.S. XIII issue of the Quill it was noted that "The Shire device was rejected on the ground that with the black and white coloration and the star it was too much like that of the Principality of Ansteorra. Since we have no ties with Ansteorra, being loyally Outlandish all, it was suggested that we perhaps replace the star with some other symbol of the Shire.

"At officer's meeting it was proposed that we place a seagull where the star was, and change the mountains somewhat."

A rather frighteningly bad drawing of the above idea, scanned from the September A.S. XIII Questing Quill. (Hey, I can diss my own "artwork.")
